Continuing our journey, we left the Arctic Circle and entered the land of the fjords.

Molde

The final leg of the trip took us to the land of fjords.  Firstly, we headed south and visited Molde.  Known as the Nice of the north, it is a cultural haven where many famous authors have lived, as well as being an international centre for Jazz music.  Its location is also perfect for exploring the wider fjords.  We decided to take an optional excursion and visit the Mardalfossen waterfall – one of the tallest in Europe.  We hiked the course of the waterfall through a nature reserve and even sampled some of the wild fruit growing off the path. It really was bliss.

Geiranger

Geiranger was our next destination. I’ve wanted to visit here for so many years. This is a picture-perfect place, it’s wise to have your camera ready as you head up to the top of the Eagles Bend view point and look out over the majestic Fjords.  But the real beauty comes on arrival and departure as the ship navigates through the tight fjords. Here you can marvel at some of the most famous and beautiful waterfalls in the world, including the Seven Sisters and Suitor waterfalls situated opposite one another. Legend has is that there were seven beautiful unmarried sisters who were wooed by a Viking warrior.  Unable to choose any one of the sisters to marry, the suitor remained in place, forever, opposite them.

Bergen

Our final port-of-call on our epic voyage was Bergen.  This charming city is Norway’s busiest port and the gateway to the Fjords.  We had an overnight stay which gave us plenty of time to explore the city including the UNESCO old wharf World Heritage Site and the world-famous fish market.  As with Edinburgh, this city felt like it was to be explored on foot.  Get out and about and see the city, particularly the old wharf, which is stunning.  Be prepared for rain though, as it rains on average 260 days a year here.

Experiencing Norway with Viking as your host is the perfect match – viewing dramatic and beautiful landscapes from a scandi-inspired interior with bags of hygge.  I fell in love with Norway and even wild Shetland ponies won’t be able to stop me from booking my next cruise to see even more.
